Round 11 commenced after a two-week break for the school holidays with the Koalas and Kangaroos picking up where they left off two weeks ago. For Gainsborough 11 Keely Regan and Tahlia Collinge both had a very successful stint in the goal circle. For Beachettes 13, the player of the match went to Lily Guthrie, who scored a couple of goals whilst in at goal shooter and played very well at wing defence and goal keeper. The Gerringong 8 team was best served this week by Tahlia McPhellamy, with Sidney Hall scoring her first goal of the season and Ellyse Cox working hard in the mid court with some great backing up. Tahlia went on to play up in the Junior B side and had a great game. Kiama Downs 9 also had a couple of stand-out players this week, with Alex Wallace playing really strongly at goal attack and Charli Parker doing likewise in the centre position. Onto the 10 years division and a great game ensued between Downs 6 and Central 10. Downs players looked for their unmarked team mates and quickly passed the ball to them, with good attacking play coming from Kirsten Smith, Emily Hoole and Georgia and Charli Lill. The Downs defence was also strong with some flying intercepts from Kara Mitchell and ably assisted by Julia Humphries. Sophie Morris moved the ball exceptionally well through the centre third and all players tried their hardest to peg back the two goal deficit. Unfortunately it was not to be and when the fulltime hooter went, Central had hung on for an 8-6 win. The Junior A game between Gainsborough 8 and Central 8 did not disappoint anyone as the game of the day, with both teams having players who had just returned from representative duties at State Age now pitted against each other as rivals. Olivia Tickle, Lily Thomson and Jade Cowgill from the Gainsborough team and Briannan and Brooke Bugden from the Central team were only two weeks ago team mates in the rep team and today, rivals in their club teams. The game commenced at a hectic pace and didn’t seem to subside any the longer it went, with both teams hungry for a win to lead the competition. Prior to today’s game, Central had led the comp on 17 points with Gainsborough 1 point away in second spot on 16 with the 1 point difference being Central’s 16 all draw with third placed, Beachettes 9, in round 2. The teams had met twice before, with Gainsborough winning round 1 13-10 and Central winning the round 6 clash, 14-7. After Gainsborough’s win last Saturday, the table is now Gainsborough 18 points, Central 17 points, with third placed Beachettes 9 on 15 points. Lily Thomson as goal shooter, Jade Cowgill as goal attack and Olivia Tickle as goal defence seemed to continue on with their good form from State Age and couple this with some good performances from Georgia De Las Heras as wing attack, Olive Ivanoff as goal defence, Raquel Fanke as wing defence, and then throw in the linchpins of the unit, Georgia Wallace and Jazmin Tikkeros alternating as centres, and you have a very well balanced unit. It will certainly be interesting in the run to the grand final come September. |
